Review And Summary of Jamb Novel “Sweet Sixteen”
In Bolaji Abdullahi’s Sweet Sixteen Novel, the protagonist is 16 year-old Aliya, whom her father usually refers to as ‘My First Lady,’.
Aliya is a brilliant girl who always ask her father lots of questions, some of which took her journalist father by total surprise.
One of the question which her Journalist father couldn’t answer is this:
“Okay Daddy, what does HAK and KOTL mean?,’’ Aliya asked.
And when the father expressed his ignorance of the acronyms, Aliya happily supplied them; ‘’HAK means ‘Hugs and Kisses’ while KOTL means ‘Kiss On The Lips’.
Another episode took place when she added that some students in her school were caught on the school’s basketball court at night having ‘’53X’ (s3x), Mr Bello almost fainted.
Her father questioned her, and it goes like this:
“But…how do you know all these?,’’ he asked almost in consternation, to which Aliya replied: ‘’Come on Daddy, everybody knows these things.”
You should know that this is Bolaji Abdullahi debut fictional work. Bolaji Abdullahi has written extensively over the years on different subjects and topics, including politics, policy and development, laid bare in an absorbing page-turner, murky truths and hitherto unspeakable issues in the ever-challenging world of teenagers and young adults.
This Novel is divided into seven sections as shown below;
• The Letter,
• The Drive,
• Work,
• The Gandhi Test,
• Dating,
• Stereotype,
• Beauty.
However, you should know that this novel’s “Sweet Sixteen” central focus is a series of conversations between Mr Bello and his 16-year-old intelligent and precocious daughter on the ‘facts of life.’
These discussion between Mr Bello and Aliya is described by the book’s editor, Molara Wood, which I decide to quote below;
“everything a teenage girl ever wanted to know but was afraid to ask.”
Another part of the book’s blurb referred to it as “A parenting manual and a guidebook for young adults.”
The above reviews notwithstanding, sociologists, educationists and policy-makers, including parents and guardians, are still very much divided on how much ‘sensitive’ information, especially on this sensitive topic “s3x education” which should be made known and revealed to Teenagers.
IN a recent survey which was conducted in the United Kingdom, a higher percentage of parents do not think s3x education should be taught to children at school.
According to a poll which was conducted by baby product website babychild.org.uk, the conclusion was reached and here’s it.
“Many parents think it is inappropriate to teach children about s3x, whilst others think it should be a parent’s choice to inform their own children on this sensitive topic.”
However, on the other side of the coin, it is believed that, just as Aliya put it in Sweet Sixteen, most teenagers are already aware of what adults seem to be hiding from them and if not well informed, teenagers will learn about it, the wrong way.
According to one expert who said and I quote below;
“Comprehensive s3x education doesn’t encourage kids to have s3x. Which also explains that just like abstinence-only programmes, good comprehensive programmes teach students that abstinence is the only surefire way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.
The difference is that these programmes go a step further in the right direction of giving students realistic and factual information about the safety of various s3xual practices, and how to improve the odds.”
In writing the novel “Sweet Sixteen” the Author, Bolaji Abdullahi, who is a former Nigerian Minister of Youths and Sports, among other previous held jobs, must have critically weighed the above positions before he decided to take this lane of educating the teenagers on a controversial topic like this.
In this novel, the Author took on varieties of young adult topics ranging from bullying, dating, stereotype, ethics and s3x education, among others.
In his drive to educate the young teen, the author finds took everything in with Aliya Bello, a teenager with a curious, fascinating and inquisitive mind, who has a devoted, knowledgable and educated father.
Through Mr Bello, who the author protray in the novel as a good father, took responsibility for the education of his daughter, including the tricky and same time, hugely important aspect of s3x education.
Reading through this novel, you get to see that Aliya is fortunate to have a father who does not leave her to struggle alone with the plagues ravaging our society today, pulling down millions of teenagers into it’s web.
The end result of this novel is truly a compelling tale, which is very much loaded with morality and textured with a rich lyrical prose and young adult lingo story-story, my bestie, OMG among others.
The storyline has an upper-middle-class flavour added to it, which includes luxuriant meals, leisurely Saturday drives and a Mrs Bello, the nurse, and in this novel, is quite often distant from father and daughter.
This novel goes a way in educating the young ones on this topic, and it’s a novel that everyone should read, and the teenagers must go through it.
This is the conclusion of the JAMB novel “Sweet Sixteen” and it’s summary.
